His remarks are paired with many of his best-known photographs. Comparing photography in turn to a sketchbook, a psychoanalytical couch, a warm kiss, and a machine gun, Cartier-Bresson vividly conveys the medium's boundless possibilities and constant challenges, as well as its unique satisfactions.

Interviews with Cartier-Bresson, Isabelle Huppert, Arthur Miller and other luminaries are woven into this indelible portrait of an icon of both photography and the world.

Along with Cartier-Bresson interviews this film also contains interviews with other creative artists (other photographers, a musician, a film director, etc.). At first glance the interviews and footage of other artists may seem arbitrary, but their incorporation is often linked to an idea OR comment that Henri has made during the course of the documentary. Therefore the film uses the common threads found in other creative pursuits to exemplify the principles underlying Cartier-Bresson’s oeuvre.

Most of the dialogue is in French and Italian, so much of the documentary has embedded English subtitles. This 70min documentary was originally recorded on a mono VHS recorder, so the stereo sound is a duplicated mono track.
